Welcome to Room 27

Kia Ora, Malo e lelei, Talofa, Goeie dag, Hallo  and welcome to a great year of learning and growing in Rm 27!  I am looking forward to the year with your children and I hope you are too!

For Topic this term we started off with Journeys of Learning and getting to know each other.  Unlocking keys to our hearts.  Room 27 had some awesome ideas.  Now we are moving onto VIOLENCE FREE BEGINS WITH ME!

 Primary Aim:
  • To develop children's communication skills to help keep themselves safe,  they will create personal safety plans.  The programme will also show each student just how valuable and loved they are.

  • Maths:  For the next 5 weeks children will be taught (Number Knowledge), Number Identification, Number sequence and order, Grouping and Place Value & Basic Facts. Then for the remainder they will be learning addition and subtraction srategies It would be of great help if your child could practise their times tables at home.  Here are a few maths game websites which children can play at home.

Reading in reading we are working on stratebgies to help us understand the story we are reading.  Strategies such as, inferencing, making connections, retelling, asking questions, and finding the main idea.  Reading every night for 15 minutes would be great.  Try the Western Leader and any interesting/funny articles that you would like to share with us bring them in so that we can discuss them during News Board.

In Writing we are doing Poetry.  WOW!!  Its so much fun.  Not only are we building up our vocabulary but poetry sticks in our heads because of the rhymes and figurative language.

In PE we are doing Adventure Based Learning – How well we can work in a team.  Everyone has such a good team spirit and we’ve already had a lot of laughs just ask Te Waka!

In Maori we are working on greetings and doing visual Mihi.  We are working on being able to explain why we chose the images and how it was signifcant to us.

School Picnic on Wednesday Evening the 15th February 2012.  This is a good opportunity for families to get together and meet their children’s teacher and other staff members at Lincoln Heights.

Student/Parent/Teacher Conferences:  This will be coming up later in the term.  You play an important role in your child’s learning.  These interviews are an opportunity for you to find out how your child is achieving their goals. Children who are actively engaged in their learning, who are focused on their next learning step and have the active support of their parents are the most successful in their achievement. I would love to see you and meet you all.

Room 27 will be an environment of mutual respect, consideration, and compassion.  I will value each child’s uniqueness and foster the growth of values, attitudes, confidence, self-esteem, independence and responsibility and tolerance of others.

If you have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to contact me; or send me a note with your child in the morning, or by e-mail; or set up a conference. I have an open door policy.

Regards

Joy
