Our Journey
Lincoln Heights School’s
bilingual education journey began as a result of a school visioning process in
2005. After staff researched into best practice in bilingual education the
Board of Trustees made a decision in 2008 to commit to the establishment of a
Samoan Bilingual Unit in 2010. Our foundation Samoan Bilingual class opened on
2nd February 2010.
Our bilingual team work with the community to develop programmes,
that build on children’s previous experiences and knowledge to achieve
educational and local goals. The main focus is to have an inclusive school
approach to bilingual education rather than a silo approach, which has been
proven unsuccessful.
The inclusive approach is
further supported by the Strategic Plan. The direction states:
“To implement and review
curriculum delivery across the school to ensure all children have the
opportunity for success in all essential learning and skill areas of the NZ
Curriculum Framework”
